The French Mayors Association was created in 1907 to answer the waitings of the Mayors wanted to have a representative of local authorities on a national level.
Initially made for and by big cities, the AMF has extended gradually to the smallest communes.
It became, at the end of the years 1920, an interlocutor recognized by the whole of public authorities,and public utility in 1933.
The AMF gathers approximately 35,700 mayors and presidents of communities, in exercise, in the municipalities of the French departments and territories, from metropolis and from overseas, without any discrimination related to municipality/community size or political persuasions of its mayor or chairperson. Its representativeness makes it an interlocutor impossible to circumvent for public authorities.
In November 1999, the Association opened its statutes to public corporations of inter-municipality co-operation (EPCI).
